Education Journalist John Merrow to be CREO Seminar Guest Speaker

John Merrow will be the guest speaker in the semester’s capstone CREO Seminar. Merrow's talk will take place at the Remick Commons of Carole Sandner Hall on Monday, April 30, 2012, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Merrow is a nationally recognized journalist who provides insightful, in-depth coverage of education issues as head of the nonprofit production company, Learning Matters. He and his team produce reports for PBS NewsHour and other media.  An education reporter since 1974, he provides news and commentary through books, newspapers, podcasts, and a blog called Taking Note

Thomas DiPrete, the Gidding Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, will be the CREO Guest Speaker on Monday, February 6, 2012. Professor DiPrete will be presenting "Peers and the Gender Gap on Educational Achievement" in 310 Jordan Hall of Science from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.. He is currently working on a research project that concerns the analysis of gender and race differences in educational achievement and addresses the causes of the rising gender gap in favor of women in college completion, the role of social skills and non-academic behaviors in the production of this gap, the question of how gender differences evolve over the life course, and the reasons why the gender gap is larger for African-Americans than for Whites.…

CREO Director Mark Berends Speaks at the WISE Summit

Mark Berends recently participated as a speaker at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), an initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, under the aegis of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.  WISE brings together 1200 decision makers and 140 speakers from 120 countries "to foster new collaboration and develop innovative solutions with the goal of inspiring creative change in education."  Mark chaired a debate on "Scaling-Up:  The Right Approach?"

Kristi Donaldson elected to AERA Division G Student Council

CREO Graduate Student Kristi Donaldson joined the AERA (American Educational Research Association) Division G Graduate Student Council in the Summer of 2011. Kristi will be serving a two-year position, where she will take part in Division G initiatives with the aim of continuing the conversations, community, and collegiality of the AERA conference throughout the academic year. Over the course of her term, she looks forward to working closely and networking with graduate students and scholars from differing subfields across the country.…

Bill Carbonaro elected chair of Sociology of Education section of ASA

Bill Carbonaro has been elected chair of the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association. The section chair is responsible for organizing all of the events for the Annual Meeting, as well as any administrative work that needs attention during the year. Bill is currently the chair-elect of the section, and his term will begin in August of 2012 after the Annual Meetings in Denver. He will serve as section chair in 2012-13, culminating with the 2013 meetings in New York City. Congratulations Bill!…
